BMW has been building cars for over 100 years. They’ve had iconic moments — the original 3 Series, the M3, the i3 that nobody loved but everyone respected. But if you ask BMW engineers privately which car matters most right now, they’ll tell you the same thing:

The new platform was designed from scratch, purely for electric vehicles. No compromises from a shared gas and EV architecture. Purpose-built battery integration, redesigned electrical systems, and an entirely new software stack that BMW calls its “6th generation” tech.
The result, according to reviewers who drove it in Germany before the US launch: the iX3 doesn’t feel like a BMW that happens to be electric. It feels like what BMW always should have been if electricity had been available from the start.
The Numbers 
The launch version arriving in US showrooms this summer is the iX3 xDrive50 — all-wheel drive, dual motor, 463 horsepower.
That’s more power than a current BMW M340i. In a family electric SUV. Zero to 60 mph comes in 4.4 seconds — quick without being theatrical, which is exactly the BMW character point.
Range: up to 400 miles on a single charge — the first BMW EV to break this barrier. The previous iX hit 324 miles at best. The jump to 400 miles changes the road trip calculus fundamentally. A 400-mile tank covers most full driving days without a stop.
Fast charging: 10% to 80% in 21 minutes at a 195 kW DC charger. Not the fastest in the segment — the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Mercedes CLA do it faster. But 21 minutes for 400 miles of range is a completely practical road trip rhythm.
Starting price: approximately $60,000.
The Interior — Where It Gets Really Interesting 
BMW made a controversial decision with the Neue Klasse interior. Instead of a traditional dashboard with a separate screen bolted on, the entire front of the cabin is reimagined around a Panoramic Vision head-up display that projects information across the lower section of the windshield — essentially putting the instrument cluster in your natural line of sight rather than requiring you to glance down.
Reviewers who drove it said it takes exactly one day to adjust to, and after that you never want to go back to a traditional cluster. The windshield becomes your information layer. The rest of the dashboard stays clean.
Physical controls are back — BMW heard the complaints about touchscreen-only interfaces and brought back tactile buttons for the most frequently used functions. Volume. Temperature. Drive mode. Real buttons. Thank you, BMW.
The materials are exceptional. This is where the $60,000 starting price makes itself felt. Open-pore wood, premium leather, and a fit and finish that feels closer to the M-branded cars than a standard entry-level luxury EV.
Who Should Buy It — And Who Should Wait
The iX3 xDrive50 at $60,000 competes primarily with the Mercedes CLA Electric ($47,250-$49,800), the Genesis GV70 Electrified ($60,000 area), and the Lexus RZ ($55,000+).
Against the Mercedes CLA: the iX3 has more range and more power. The CLA has faster charging and lower price. If you’re doing frequent long highway drives — iX3. If you’re mostly city and suburban — CLA.
Against Genesis GV70 Electrified: similar price, similar luxury level. The BMW driving dynamics win. The Genesis warranty and reliability reputation win. Your priorities decide it.
One thing to note: single and dual-motor lower-power variants are coming in early 2027. If $60,000 is stretching the budget, waiting for a less powerful base model may make sense.
