The S-Class is still the sentence other cars are measured against.
The 2026 G90 is the sentence that shows up $27,000 cheaper and ties it on a rankings page.
Genesis lists the 3.5T AWD at $92,700. Mercedes lists the S 500 4MATIC at $119,500. Dest, tax, and a couple of option boxes turn that into a round thirty. G90 E-SC with the electric supercharger is $103,000. Prestige Black is $105,750. The S-Class ladder keeps climbing — S 580 around $130,700, AMG S 63 E Performance $189,800.
U.S. News has the G90 tied with the S-Class at No. 1 in large luxury. That is the “same score” in the headline. It is a value score as much as a velvet-seat score. Read it that way.

What $30,000 Does Not Buy
It does not buy the three-pointed star on a valet ticket. If that is the product, stop. The G90 will not do that job.
It does not buy Mercedes’ engine buffet. S 500 is a 442-hp inline-six. Then PHEV, V8, AMG hybrid that makes cartoon numbers. G90 is a twin-turbo 3.5 V6 at 375 hp or 409 with the 48-volt e-supercharger. Enough. Not a flex.
It does not buy the rear cabin as first class. S-Class still does the tray tables, the champagne-adjacent packages, the “I am not driving” theater. G90 E-SC adds massaging rear seats and four-wheel steering and air suspension. Close for a family. Not a Maybach afternoon.
Resale still leans German. CarBuzz-style five-year guesses put more of an S-Class dollar back in your pocket. Genesis is younger money. The lease residual is the honest comparison, not a forum badge.

What $30,000 Does Buy
Standard AWD. Soft-close doors. Massaging fronts. Leather that does not feel like a mid-trim E-Class leftover. A five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty against Mercedes’ four-year/50,000. Genesis Concierge if you use the phone number.
The cabin is quiet. The ride on the E-SC air setup is the reason people cross-shop instead of laughing. Edmunds still calls the G90 thousands under a 7 Series and nearly thirty under an S-Class while the A8 looks old.
You are not missing horsepower in traffic. You are missing a service lane that exists in every suburb and a trade-in number that appraisers recite in their sleep.
The Honest Truth
If you write your own checks and sit in the back, the S-Class is still the S-Class. Pay it.
If you drive yourself, want the equipment loaded from the first window sticker, and can live with a winged badge that some country-club lots still squint at, the G90 is the rational flagship. Thirty thousand is a loaded Tahoe. It is also three years of insurance and tires.
Do not option the Mercedes like a G90 and then claim the gap vanished. Do not buy the base G90 and expect AMG theater. Compare S 500 to E-SC Prestige. That is the real pair — about $15,000 apart after dest, not thirty, and still a different religion at the dealer.
Would you take the tied ranking and the extra $30,000 in the account — or is the star still the only score that counts?
